Interactions and residence times in aqueous alkali metal nitrite solutions from Raman spectral measurements
Abstract
Aqueous solutions of LiNO2, NaNO2, KNO2 and CsNO2 generate only three Raman lines even though extremely high concentrations are attainable. The relative integrated intensities are proportional to concentration and show no specific cation dependence. The frequencies approach those of the corresponding solid. The halfwidth of the ca. 815 cm–1 line increases with concentration of LiNO2, but decreases for KNO2 and CsNO2. The data are discussed in terms of solvent-shared interactions for LiNO2 and rapid, disordered collisions and exchanges for KNO2 and CsNO2.
