Lyotropic systems. Effect of organic additives on paraffin chain electrolyte solutions. Part 7.—Exploratory optical (and other) studies on the system hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (H.T.A.B.)+ sodium p-chlorobenzoate (NaPCB)+ water

Abstract

Several aqueous solutions of sodium p-chlorobenzoate (NaPCB) and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) at a mole ratio of 2NaPCB : 1HTAB have been examined by (1) a conventional light scattering method, (2) measurement of light transmitted between crossed polaroids whilst the solutions are under shear (3) relaxation of this transmission when the shearing is stopped and (4) measurement of the mechanical oscillation time of the fluids.

The results are discussed in terms of a reasonable model for the systems and moderate agreement is found between the micelle sizes deduced from the various measurements.
