An abnormal Friedel–Crafts reaction: 3,4-dihydro-7-hydroxy-8-isopentyl-4-phenylcoumarin and 7-hydroxy-8-isopentylcoumarin from 7-methoxy-8-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)coumarin (osthol)

Abstract

Refluxing osthol (III), one of the major lactonic constituents of Prangos pabularia Lindl. (Umbelliferae), with anhydrous aluminium chloride in benzene gave 3,4-dihydro-7-hydroxy-8-isopentyl-4-phenylcoumarin and 7-hydroxy-8-isopentylcoumarin, identified from spectra and chemical correlations.
