15H-cyclohepta[2,1-a:4,5-a′]dinaphthalen-15-one. The condensation of naphthalene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride with 2-naphthylacetic acid

Abstract

The condensation of naphthalene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride with 2-naphthylacetic acid gave the two structurally isomeric (2-naphthylmethylene)naphtho[1,2-c]furanones (VII) and (VIII) in the ratio 7 : 1. 2-[2-(2-Naphthyl)-ethyl]-1-naphthoic acid (IX), formed by reduction of the 3-substituted 1-ketone (VII) has been converted into 15H-cyclohepta[2,1-a:4,5-a′]dinaphthalen-15-one (IV).
