Chlorination of carbazole and its derivatives with 1-chlorobenzotriazole

Abstract

1-Chlorobenzotriazole is shown to be a convenient and highly efficient reagent for nuclear chlorination of carbazole and several derivatives. Reactions proceed to completion at ambient temperatures, yields are high in all cases, and mono-, di-, and tetra-chlorination occur with equal facility, according to the molar ratio of reagents.
