Observations on the conversion of acetone into pinacol hydrate by magnesium amalgam
Abstract
The stoicheimetry of the reduction of acetone by magnesium amalgam is 1 Me2CO : 1 Mg. Reaction takes place at the metal surface and only surface amalgamation of the magnesium is necessary. Metal salts other than mercuric salts can also activate magnesium in this reaction but are much less effective. The role of amalgamation is considered.
