2-Azafluoranthene-3(2H)-one and 2-azafluoranthene have been synthesised from fluorene-1-carboxylic acid and their properties have been investigated. The azafluoranthene undergoes nitration to yield 9-nitro- and 4,9-di-nitro-2-azafluoranthene.
