The reaction between aromatic compounds and derivatives of tertiary acids. Part XI II. The structure of phenylcamphoric acid

Abstract

The isomeric phenylcamphoric acids, m.p. 140 and 117° prepared by Friedel–Crafts reactions on camphoric anhydride and isolauronolic acid respectively have not the structures previously assigned to them. Both are now shown to be 2,2,3-trimethyl-4-phenylcyclopentanecarboxylic acids which differ only in their configurations about C(1); the hydrogen atoms on C(3) and C(4) of each compound probably have a cis-relationship.
