Quinoxalines and related compounds. Part VIII. The reactions of quinoxaline-2(1H)-ones and -2,3(1H,4H)-diones with hydrazine

Abstract

Quinoxalin-2(1H)-one undergoes ring fission on treatment with boiling 50% aqueous hydrazine to give a mixture of 2-methylbenzimidazole and o-phenylenediamine. Quinoxaline-2,3-(1H,4H)-dione and its 1-methyl derivative are converted into 3-hydrazinoquinoxalin-2(1H)-ones on similar treatment.
