Reactions of phosphine sulphides with aryl-lithiums

Abstract

The reactions of triarylphosphine sulphides with aryl-lithiums to give triarylphosphines involve predominant attack of the aryl-lithium on phosphorus to give a five-co-ordinate intermediate. Diphenylphosphine sulphide and phenyl-lithium give triphenylphosphine. 2,2,3,4,4-Pentamethyl-1-phenylphosphetan sulphide, with two molar proportions of phenyl-lithium, gives (1,1,2,3-tetramethyl-3-phenylbutyl)diphenylphosphine.
