Mass spectra of glycolaldehyde and glyceraldehyde

Abstract

The mass spectra of the dimeric forms of glycolaldehyde and glyceraldehyde are reported for solid samples injected directly into the source of a mass spectrometer. Both compounds fragment via routes which are explicable in terms of the isomerisation of the molecular ion via a four-membered transition state.
