Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance study of the acetic anhydride–sulphuric acid system
Abstract
Initial protonation of acetic anhydride by sulphuric acid is followed by cleavage to (protonated) acetic acid and acetyl sulphate. The acetyl sulphate is decomposed by further addition of sulphuric acid yielding a second molecule of (protonated) acetic acid and HS2O7–. The latter reacts with the bisulphate ion present yielding sulphuric acid and S2O72–.
