Molecular polarisability. Conformations of some substituted styrenes
Abstract
Dipole moments and molar Kerr constants (×1012) at 25°C are reported for the following as solutes in carbon tetrachloride: styrene (+22·2); α-chlorostyrene (1·68 D, + 106); α-methylstyrene (+17·5); cis-β-bromostyrene (1·22 D, +77·0); cis-β-methylstyrene (+20·8); α-chloro-2,4,6-trimethylstyrene (1·57 D, –1·8); trans-β-nitrostyrene (4·44 D, +2570). Analysis of results yields information concerning the preferred conformations of these molecules.
