The thermal decomposition of acetaldehyde azine

Abstract

Acetaldehyde azine has been pyrolysed in both flow and static systems at 520—700 K. The decomposition yielded nitrogen, hydrogen cyanide, and methyl cyanide, together with a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. Arrhenius parameters have been obtained for the production of the major products, methane and nitrogen. The reaction mechanism involves the participation of methyl and isopropyl radicals, and of ethylidene. Arrhenius parameters for the abstraction of a hydrogen atom from acetaldehyde azine by methyl radicals have been estimated.
