Kinetics of reactions of Friedel–Crafts acylating agents. Part I. Two novel methods of measuring reaction rates

Abstract

Two novel methods to determine rates of aromatic acylation are described. The ‘Titrimetric Method’ measures the concentration of an acylating agent by the addition of an excess of mesitylene or anisole and bromate–bromide titration of the unreacted substrate. The ‘Adiabatic Method’ relates the progress of a reaction to the adiabatic temperature rise. The benzoylation of toluene has been used as a model reaction and the results from both methods are in good agreement with those found previously.
