Kinetics of reactions in heterocycles. Part VII. Replacement of the trimethylammonio group in substituted purines by hydroxide ion

Abstract

A kinetic study has been made of the reactivity of 9-methylpurin-2(and 6)-yltrimethylammonium chloride, e.g.(1), purin-6(and 8)-yltrimethylammonium chloride and 6-chloro-9-methylpurine (for comparison) towards hydroxide ion. The trimethylammonio-compounds were found to be intermediate in reactivity between that of the methyl-sulphonyl and chloro-analogues, but with a reactivity approaching that of the methylsulphonyl compound. The preparation of the trimethylammonio-compounds is described.

Ionisation constants, u.v. and n.m.r. spectra are recorded and discussed.
