The J-band of 1,1′-diethyl-9-methyl-4,5;4′,5′-dibenzthiacarbocyanine chloride in aqueous solution is reported. The band shape is satisfactorily accounted for by applying local field theory to a model consisting of a linear polymer of parallel dye molecules at an angle of ca. 30° to the line and containing four or more molecules per aggregate.
