Molecular polarisability. Aromatic isothiocyanates
Abstract
Dipole moments and molar Kerr constants (×1012) at 25 °C are reported and analysed for phenyl isothiocyanate and three para-substituted derivatives (p-X·C6H4·NCS; X = Cl, Br, and Me) as solutes. From observations on solutions in carbon tetrachloride results are: X = H, 2·69 D, +1230; X = Cl, 1·15 D, +380; X = Br 1·17 D, +430; X = Me, 3·17 D, +1895. With benzene as solvent the corresponding values are: X = H, 2·59 D, +1360; X = Cl, 1·32 D; X = Me, 3·26 D. Anisotropic polarisabilities are derived for the Car–NCS group.
