Hydrated complexes of manganese(II) and cobalt(II) halides with heterocyclic ligands

Abstract

The preparations are reported of the orange complexes [CoL4(H2O)2]X2(L =β-picoline or 3-ethylpyridine, X = Br or I) and of [Mn(3-ethylpyridine)4(H2O)2]I2. The bromides also exist in purple, anhydrous forms. Electronic, i.r., and e.s.r. spectra are consistent with the co-ordination of water molecules in the hydrates. It is shown that the e.s.r. spectrum of traces of manganese(II) in a cobalt compound can indicate the site symmetry of the host lattice.
