A search for the 4A24T2 transition in the tetrachlorocobaltate(II) ion

Abstract

The i.r. spectra of A2CoCl4 salts, where A = tetramethylammonium and tetraethylammonium, are reported in the range 3000–4000 cm–1, and compared with the spectra of the isomorphous manganese and zinc compounds. A peak at ca. 3400 cm–1 is observed for the compounds containing CoCl42– but not in the manganese and zinc compounds. This band is tentatively assigned to the 4A24T2 transition of cobalt(II) in a tetrahedral environment.
