A search for the 4A2→4T2 transition in the tetrachlorocobaltate(II) ion
Abstract
The i.r. spectra of A2CoCl4 salts, where A = tetramethylammonium and tetraethylammonium, are reported in the range 3000–4000 cm–1, and compared with the spectra of the isomorphous manganese and zinc compounds. A peak at ca. 3400 cm–1 is observed for the compounds containing CoCl42– but not in the manganese and zinc compounds. This band is tentatively assigned to the 4A2→4T2 transition of cobalt(II) in a tetrahedral environment.
