N-substituted urea complexes of thorium and uranium tetrahalides

Abstract

Uranium tetrachloride and tetrabromide form 1 : 2 complexes with NNNN′-tetramethylurea (tmu), NNNN′-tetraethylurea (teu), NN′-dimethyl-NN′-diethylurea (ddeu) and NN′-dimethyl-NN′-diphenylurea (ddu), whereas uranium tetrachloride forms 1 : 4 complexes with NN′-dimethylurea (dmu) and with NNN′-trimethylurea (trmu). In contrast, the thorium tetrahalides form the 1 : 3 complexes ThCl4,3ddu, ThCl4,3tmu and ThBr4,3tmu, as well as the 1 : 6 complex ThCl4,6dmu and the 1 : 4 complex ThCl4,4trmu, the last being the only compound isolated for the thorium halides which is of the same stoicheiometry as the uranium analogue. I.r. spectroscopic and magnetic susceptibility results are reported for these complexes.
