Complexes of nickel(II) with o-nitrosophenols (mono-oximes of ortho-benzoquinones)

Abstract

Complexes of the type Ni(qo)2 and Ni(qo)2,2py have been prepared, where qoH is 4-chloro-2-nitrosophenol, 4-bromo-2-nitrosophenol, 4-methyl-2-nitrosophenol, and 4-t-butyl-2-nitrosophenol and py is pyridine. The magnetic susceptibilities and electronic, i.r., and mass spectra of the complexes have been investigated. The complexes Ni(qo)2 are dimeric in the solid, and, except when qoH = 4-bromo-2-nitrosophenol, mass spectrometry shows evidence of association in the vapour. The two compounds which were sufficiently soluble (qoH = 4-chloro-2-nitrosophenol and 4-t-butyl-2-nitrosophenol) are also dimeric in chloroform solution. The pyridine adducts are monomeric. The complex Ni(qo)2, 2H2O (qoH = 4-chloro-2-nitrosophenol) is polymeric.
