Biosynthesis of cularine

Abstract

Phenolic oxidative coupling of the diphenolic isoquinoline (I), followed by O-methylation, gave cularine (V) and concentrine type compound (VII) while the same reaction of the isoquinoline (II) gave the dienones (IXa) and (IXb).
