Loss of cobalt and iron from lithium tetraborate fusions in graphite crucibles

Abstract

It has been found that both iron and cobalt are lost from lithium tetraborate fusions performed at 1 200 °C in graphite crucibles. The elements segregate as tiny pieces of metal near the graphite-fusion interface owing to reduction. The same reaction could well occur with other metals of lower affinity for oxygen than carbon and so these also would disappear from the fusion.
