Evidence for very early ionic effects in water radiolysis

Abstract

Yields of oxidized and reduced products from the radiolysis of aqueous solutions have been measured. It has been assumed that both H3O+(or H2O+) and e can be trapped prior to hydration by using sufficiently high concentrations of appropriate solutes, e.g., anions for H3O+. By analogy with conventional kinetics, charge scavenging is assumed to compete with first-order hydration or recombination. Values G°(H3O+)=G°(e)≅ 3.8 have been obtained.
