Oscillatory approach to equilibrium in closed chemical systems

Abstract

An established theorem concerning the impossibility of an oscillatory approach to equilibrium for a set of first order chemical reactions taking place under non-isothermal conditions is generalized for reactions of arbitrary order taking place under non-isothermal conditions. The proof fails if non-thermal radiation is involved and the inapplicability of such theorems to oscillations about the “kinetic steady state” is emphasized.
