A Simple Unequivocal Synthesis of 1,2-Dialkylhydrazines

Abstract

1,2-Dialkylhydrazine hydrochlorides can be prepared, in high yield, by reduction of hydrazones or azines with diborane. Isolation of the hydrazone is avoided by using a one-step condensation-reduction procedure. Treatment of benzaldehyde methylhydrazone or dibenzoylhydrazone with excess of lithium aluminium hydride in boiling bis-2-methoxyethyl ether gives only partial reduction or cleavage of the N–N bond.
