Optical rotatory dispersion. Part LXIV. Influence of solvents upon the cotton effects of some ketones

Abstract

The influence of solvent on the amplitudes of the Cotton effects of a series of ketones (mainly steroids) has been studied. Ten ketones were examined in a range of six or seven solvents. Over 50 more ketones were examined in methanol and hexane only. In the nonpolar solvent hexane, wide variations in the degree of ‘fine structure’ of the Cotton effects were noted. Two tentative generalisations regarding correlations between solvent effects and structural type have emerged.
