Kinetics of hydrogen isotope exchange reactions. Part XX. Aliphatic exchange induced by γ-radiation on aqueous solutions of t-butyl alcohol (2-methylpropan-2-ol)
Abstract
The action of γ-radiation from a cobalt-60 source on an aqueous solution of t-butyl alcohol containing tritium results in tritium exchange between the solvent and the methyl groups of the substrate. The same dose of γ-radiation is approximately equally effective as tritium β-radiation. The radiation also results in the formation of acetone. The extent of exchange for a given radiation dose is lower in partially aerated than in degassed solutions.
