An optical determination of the stability of the fluoranil–hexamethylbenzene complex in solution

Abstract

From optical measurements of solutions containing fluoranil (2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoquinone) and hexamethylbenzene in 1,2-dichloroethane over a range of temperature, ΔH=–3·9 ± 0·2 kcal mol–1 and ΔS=–10 ± 1 cal mol–1 K–1 for complex formation, have been obtained. These values are in good agreement with those obtained from n.m.r. chemical-shift measurements.
