Electron spin resonance studies. Part XXIV. Reactions of the radicals ·CO2H and ·CO2 with oximes and nitroalkanes

Abstract

Evidence has been obtained from e.s.r. studies for the ready addition of the radicals ·CO2H and ·CO2 to the C[double bond, length as m-dash]N bond of oximes and of the latter radical to the C[double bond, length as m-dash]N bond of the aci-anions from some nitroalkanes. One-electron reduction of the nitroalkanes themselves by either ·CO2H or ·CO2 is followed by processes which lead to the corresponding alkylcarboxynitroxide radicals, but in a sufficiently acidic medium the spectrum of the protonated nitroalkane radical anion can also be observed. The e.s.r. parameters for all the radicals detected are described.
