Electric dipole moments and conformations of pp′-substituted bibenzyls and phenyl-substituted succinonitriles as solutes

Abstract

The electric dipole moments of four pp′-substituted bibenzyls and of seven substituted succinonitriles in the solvents benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and dioxan over a range of temperatures (–20° to 60°) are recorded. The conformations of these molecules are discussed in terms of gauche–trans population distributions and the energy differences between them. The relation between meso and racemic (±) diastereoisomers and their dipole moments is clarified.
