Benzene-induced solvent shifts and the stoicheiometry of benzene–solute complexes

Abstract

The stoicheiometry of association between benzene and several polar solutes has been determined from the solvent shifts at various concentrations. The results suggest that there is a continuum of behaviour between the extremes of stoicheiometric and non-stoicheiometric associations—chloroform forms 1 : 1-complexes while ketones associate only randomly with benzene.
