Catalysis by imidazole and by the imidazol-4-ylacetate ion in the hydrolysis of aryl acetates

Abstract

Direct evidence has been obtained for the formation of N-acetylimidazole in imidazole-catalysed hydrolysis of aryl acetates with both good and poor leaving groups. No evidence could be found for bifunctional catalysis in the hydrolysis of p-tolyl acetate catalysed by imidazol-4-ylacetate ion.
