Preparation, magnetic, and electronic spectral properties of some chromium(III)–NN′-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato) complexes: crystal and molecular structure of NN′-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato)diaquochromium(III) chloride

Abstract

The preparation, electronic spectra, and magnetic properties of compounds of the type [Cr(salen)(H2O)2]X (X = Cl, PF6, and BPh4), [Cr(salen)(MeOH)2]Cl, M[Cr(salen)(OH)2],xH2O (x= 4, M = K; x= 6, M = Na), [Cr(salen)Cl], [Cr(salen)Cl(py)], [Cr(salen)(OH)],0·5H2O, and [Cr(salen)(OH)] are reported [salen =NN′-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato); py = pyridine]. Crystals of [Cr(salen)(H2O)2]Cl are monoclinic, space group Cc, with Z= 4 and cell dimensions a= 14·08, b= 15·97, c= 7·49 Å, β= 99·7°. Atomic co-ordinates were obtained by Fourier methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares calculations to R 0·091 for 1481 independent reflexions. The [Cr(salen)(H2O)2]+ unit contains trans water molecules and the electronic spectral and magnetic properties of this and the other complexes are discussed in terms of their molecular structures.
