NN′-ethylenebis-(o-aminobenzylideneiminato)cobalt(II) and its derivatives. Part I. Physical properties and shape

Abstract

The preparation is described of various NN′-ethylenebis-(o-aminobenzylideneiminato)cobalt(II), [Co(amben)], complexes. Their i.r. and electronic spectra and magnetic properties are studied and it is concluded that the compounds are low-spin, four-co-ordinate, and square planar. The cobalt ion shows no tendency to increase its co-ordination number beyond four, which may be due to the very high ligand field exerted by amben and its relatives.
