Analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the type [AMXn]2, assuming JX= 0

Abstract

In order to interpret a novel five-line pattern observed in the n.m.r. spectrum of various trans-bis(di-t-butylphosphine)–metal complexes, the [AMXn]2 spin system, with Jx= 0, has been analysed. In order to obtain solutions capable of being analysed, it is assumed also that 2|JM|[double less-than, compressed]|LAM–χLAX|, but this assumption is not necessary if a computer is available to solve the series of 4 × 4 matrices. The solution is applied to trans-bis(di-t-butylphosphine)–metal complexes to show how 2JP–M–P, 1JP–H, 3JP–M–P–H, 3JP–C–C–H, and 5JP–M–P–C–C–H may be obtained.
