Structural variety in mixed cobalt(III)–cobalt(II) chloro-compounds with 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2′-bipyridyl
Abstract
A variety of different crystalline compounds of the cations cis-[Co(phen)2Cl2]+, cis-[Co(bipy)2Cl2]+, and [Co(phen)3]3+(phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, bipy = 2,2′-bipyridyl) with cobalt(II) chloro-anions have been obtained. Some are simple salts of [CoCl4]2–, including different hydrates and polymorphs; others are ‘acid adducts’, containing hydrated protons, and one is another salt of the anion [Co(H2O)Cl3]–, first reported in this series. The new crystalline species are assigned the structures : [Co(phen)3]2[CoCl4]3,nH2O (2 forms), [Co(phen)3][CoCl4]2[H2n-1On], (8-n)H2O, [Co(phen)3][CoCl4]Cl,4·5H2O, cis-[Co(phen)2Cl2]2[CoCl4], cis-[Co(phen)2Cl2]2[CoCl4][H2n-1On]Cl,(4-n)H2O, cis-[Co(bipy)2Cl2]2[CoCl4],nH2O, cis-[Co(bipy)2Cl2][Co(H2O)-Cl3],2H2O, and cis-[Co(bipy)2Cl2]2[CoCl4]. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns of all new species are listed.
