Nickel(II) and zinc(II) complexes of 2-alkoxyphenols

Abstract

The preparation and properties of a new series of nickel(II) complexes with 2-methoxyphenol and its 4-formyl-, 4-nitro-, and 4-formyl-6-methoxy-derivatives are reported. The hydrates of general formula Ni(ligand)2,xH2O dehydrate to yield complexes of the type Ni(ligand)2. Physical measurements show that the ligands produce weak fields and that the complexes contain octahedral nickel(II) with room temperature paramagnetic moments in the normally observed range. There is tentative evidence for methoxy-group co-ordination in some cases and several of the complexes may be polymeric. Zinc(II) complexes of 2-methoxyphenol and 2-ethoxy-4-formylphenol demonstrate that the visible spectra of the nickel complexes are not derived from the ligands.
