Electron spin resonance spectrum of the copper(II) ion incorporated into barium chloride dihydrate
Abstract
A peak at g= 2·9 in the e.s.r. spectrum of polycrystalline BaCl2,2H2O, containing 5% CuCl2,2H2O, is attributed to the copper(II) ions entering eight-co-ordinate substitutional sites. The g-values are derived for this situation, and shown to agree with experiment, if the sites have square-antiprismatic effective symmetry. The inequivalence of the ligands is not reflected in the crystal field. Such high symmetry is not found in anhydrous barium chloride
