Metal carbonyl chemistry. Part X. Mono(fluoro-olefin) complexes from pentacarbonyliron

Abstract

U.v. irradiation of fluoro-olefins with pentacarbonyliron or nonacarbonyldi-iron gives complexes of the type (olefin)Fe(CO)4(olefin = CF2:CFCl, CF2:CFBr, CF2:CCl2, CF3·CF:CF2, CF3·CH:CF2, cyclo-C4F6, cyclo-C5F8, or cyclo-C6F10) in which the olefin is only weakly bound to iron. Thermal decomposition, and reactions of the complex from hexafluoropropene with halogens, acid, base, triphenylphosphine, and phosphorus pentachloride are discussed. The mono-olefin complex initially formed from tetrafluoroethylene reacts readily with a second molecule of olefin to give cyclo-octafluorotetramethylenetetracarbonyliron.
