Electron spin resonance spectra of some perchlorate, thiocyanate, or iodide complexes of manganese(triphenylphosphine or triphenylarsine oxides) of the type Mn(Ph3XO)4Y2

Abstract

X-Band e.s.r. spectra have been measured for the compounds Mn(Ph3XO)4Y2(X = P or As; Y = ClO4, NCS, or I) and, by comparison with calculated spectra, values of the parameters D and λ(=E/D) have been deduced. It is concluded that these complexes do not contain planar Mn(Ph3XO)42+ ions and that the perchlorate compounds are probably five-co-ordinate. Electronic spectra and room-temperature magnetic moments are recorded for some corresponding nickel complexes, as are vibrational spectra for both the nickel and the manganese compounds.
