An electron spin resonance study of vanadium(II). Part II. V2+ in single crystals of AgCl
Abstract
The (VCl6)4– ion has been detected substitutionally located in the silver chloride lattice. Associated with each V2+ ion is an Ag+ vacancy along a crystallographic axis. E.s.r. line-width effects indicate that this vacancy is strongly coupled to the vanadium ion via lattice phonons. The g= 1·970 ± 0·003 corresponds to a crystal field splitting 10Dq=k× 14,700 cm.–1 where k is the orbital reduction factor. The e.s.r. signals were unaffected by exposure of the crystals to white light and X-rays during several days.
