Substituent effects on the different modes of alkyne photoaddition to quinones

Abstract

Evidence on the role of a methoxy-substituent in directing cyclobutene formation in alkyne–quinone photoadditions is presented which does not support an enhancement of π,π*-character in the reactive state.
