4-Methyl-sterols and sterols in Messel shale (eocene)

Abstract

From Messel shale extracts (50 million years) 4-methyl-sterols and the corresponding 3-ketones have been isolated (and fully characterised), together with triterpene alcohols and ketones; saturated and unsaturated sterols have also been detected, but in much smaller amounts.
