Enhanced reactivity of nucleophiles: orbital symmetry and the so-called “α-effect”

Abstract

Two explanations of the “α-effect” are advanced: (a) electron repulsion due to pπpπ overlap and (b) intramolecular catalysis when (a) cannot operate.
