Dielectric properties of maleic and phthalic anhydride charge-transfer complexes with aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract

The dielectric properties of charge-transfer complexes between non-polar donors (aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxan) and polar acceptors (maleic and phthalic anhydrides) are reported. The dielectric absorption contours are close to that of a Debye single relaxation absorption. The results are explained assuming that the observed relaxation rate is a weighted average of the relaxation rates of the uncomplexed anhydride and of the complex. The complexes are probably of the “contact charge-transfer type”.
