Behaviour of hydrogen electrode in H2O + D2O mixtures

Abstract

A theoretical equation for the variation with solvent deuterium atom fraction n of the standard e.m.f. E°n of a cell containing the hydrogen gas and silver/silver chloride electrodes is derived and tested against the experimental results of Noonan and La Mer.1 The comparison is used to estimate the equilibrium constants for the reactions H2O(g)+ HD(g)= HDO(g)+ H2(g), and HDO(g)+ D2(g)= D2O(g)+ HD(g).
