Extension of the Bjerrum theory of ion association

Abstract

Bjerrum's theory of ion association in water is extended allowing for dielectric saturation of the solvent water, for the polarizability of the ions, and for hydration of the ions. Calculated radii of hydrated ions in symmetric ion-pairs agree well with radii obtained from mobility data. For ion-pairs with a net charge the agreement is less satisfactory.
