Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of fluoroethanes. Part 3.—Derivatives of sulphur hexafluoride

Abstract

The 1H and 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of ten alkylsulphur pentafluorides are described. Chemical shifts and coupling constants involving both pentafluorosulphur and alkyl groups are presented and discussed. Evidence is presented for the importance of a “through space” contribution to certain couplings between the two groups. Complications arising from the existence of two kinds of fluorine (axial and basal) within the SF5 have necessitated an approximate form of spectral analysis.
